A summary of the project:
“Perfect Imperfections” is inspired by women’s insecurities, specifically their bodily insecurities, and was created to inspire women to love their natural self and stop seeking for change. As a woman living in western contemporary society, it is apparent that toxic, unattainable beauty standards have negatively impacted our self-worth. I aim to empower women to feel confident in their own skin by demonstrating that our ‘imperfections’ are subjective, and our worth is not defined by societal pressures or other’s perceptions of beauty. I strived to create a conceptual collection where at first glance my garments are innovative and current but with deeper understanding of my inspiration, the viewer is able to realise their own beauty. Whilst taking influence from the silhouettes presented by the naked female form, I aim to shine a light on the belief that ‘your imperfections are perfect’. By incorporating said bodily insecurities to create my designs, I aspire to prove that what society classes as unattractive, I can present as admirable. As a designer, I am very passionate about the fulfilment of inclusivity within the industry, which is heavily reflected throughout my concept. I aim to encourage others to design with the same outlook to praise our ‘flaws’ and celebrate the rise of diversity in fashion. I recognise that this project will not change the beauty standards, but I hope that my innovation will highlight the importance of self-acceptance.
